# Write a prompt

> Build a prompt from blocks, give it a shortcut, and choose whether the AI asks questions or works one step at a time.

On the Prompts page, click **New prompt**. The editor opens on the right. To change a prompt later, click its card.

To start from text you already have, click **Draft from text** at the top of a new prompt and paste it. See [Draft with AI](/draft/overview).

## Name and shortcut

* **Prompt name**: how the prompt appears in lists and menus.
* **Shortcut** (optional): letters, numbers, `-` and `_`. With the shortcut `followup`, typing `"""followup` in any text field inserts the prompt at once. Leave it empty to reach the prompt from the menu only.

## Blocks

A prompt is built from up to five blocks. Switch on the ones the task needs:

| Block | What it's for |
| - | - |
| **Role** | Who the AI is, like "You are a senior software engineer". |
| **Objective** | The task, stated clearly. |
| **Context** | Background the AI needs. |
| **Examples** | Sample input and output to copy. |
| **Constraints** | What the AI must not do, or must stay within. |

Role and Objective start switched on. On a new prompt, **Load example** fills the blocks with a sample to start from.

## Ask User Questions

On by default. The AI asks you clarifying questions before it does the task: one at a time, no more than five, and it asks you to confirm before it gives the final result. Switch it off to skip the questions.

This setting is saved with the prompt.

## Interactive Steps

Off by default. The AI first lists the steps it plans to take, then works one step at a time and waits for your answer before the next.

This setting isn't saved with the prompt. It applies to every prompt you copy, and is kept per browser: the dashboard and the phone page share it in the same browser. The Chrome extension has its own **Interactive Steps** switch in the popup's Prompts tab, for prompts you copy or insert with the extension.

## Details

* **Strategy**: CoT, ToT, Few-shot, One-shot, RAG or Agentic.
* **Intent**: Writing, Coding, Support, SEO, Analysis, Planning, Research or Teaching.
* **Output type**: JSON, Markdown, SOP or Plain.
* **Folder** and **Labels**.

While you write, SprintBrain may suggest a strategy and intent, with how sure it is. Click **Apply** to accept them.

## Save and history

Click **Create prompt**, or **Save changes** on a prompt you're editing. Every save is kept: click **History** to see earlier versions and restore one.

A [quality score](/prompts/quality-score) sits in the editor and updates as you type.
